Are you stuck in a rut when it comes to the design of your living room? Why not shake things up with one of the most popular trends in interior design in recent years? Not only does a rustic design create an impressive aesthetic for your home, but it is also much easier to achieve than you may have imagined. By combining a few basic principles you can create a living area that looks like it came straight from the pages of your favourite decor magazine.

Make use of what you have

You may just be discovered that many of the items that you already have can be incorporated into your rustic living room layout. However, you may just need to get your paintbrush out to whitewash your large items like coffee tables and side tables. This works best for larger wooden items so you may need to replace some of your decorative pieces.

Take advantage of natural lighting

If you want to create a room that looks like it belongs in a country home, take a look at your windows farmhouses often have large windows that allow light to flood into the room. Move your furniture around so that all of the major pieces face your window and replace any heavy curtains with light drapes that let in more light.

Mix and match

Although it is tempting to purchase matching couches, bookshelves and side tables when planning your living room, this does not really add to a rustic living room layout. Instead, play around with your furniture pair a brightly coloured velvet couch with wicker armchairs. You may also want to play around with bookshelves and opt for a scattered as well as straight design.

Go for warm colours

One of the easiest ways to transform your living room into a rustic sanctuary is to play with the colour scheme. Replace all of the cool tones in your room with warm ochres, mustards, berry-tones and browns. This is fairly simple, all you need to do is add a new coat of paint to your walls and switch out scatter pillows and throws.

Layer textures

A fun way to add a little rustic charm is to add several different textures to your life. Cover a wooden floor with a natural fibre rug topped with a metal-framed coffee table. On your couch, you can use fluffy merino wool scatters next to a flannel blanket in classic buffalo plaid. Not only is this appealing to the eye, but it also adds a sensory effect that makes you feel unbelievably comfortable, which is exactly what you want when creating a rustic design in your home.

Settle on a theme

There are a number of different options that you can go for when it comes to the decor of your home. For a classic rustic living room layout, use a variety of country elements. Graphic prints with other elements like scales and hay bales look great, however, you could also go for a wildlife theme. To achieve this, mount antlers on your walls and include prints of woodlands animals in your frames to accentuate your family pictures.

Take advantage of moulding

You may believe that moulding is a rather outdated interior design element, however, this could not be further from the truth. You can use these as accents on your walls to draw the eye to the fireplace or the bookshelf you are using as a centrepiece in the room. You could also use moulding as an easy option to break up the line of a wall. Paint the lower portion of the wall in a darker shade for an attractive statement.

Use lighting to your advantage

If you do not live in a home with copious amounts of natural light then you need to include adequate lighting in the room to simulate this feature of a rustic living room design. Opt for recessed ceiling lights to create the impression that you have enough natural light in the room and use standing lights to accentuate the other furniture pieces in your space.

Don’t be afraid to get seasonal

One of the greatest advantages of rustic design in your living room is the versatility it offers you. Once Autumn rolls around, get out all of your fake pumpkins and autumnal accessories. Similarly, you can include more fresh plants and flowers in your space to capture the spirit of the season. Regardless, of the season, your rustic living room will make these decorations stand out.
